This group aims to spread awareness about HIV and AIDS and remove stigma, myths and misconceptions.

Approximately 40 million people are currently living with HIV. HIV is a wide spread pandemic that is crippling and incurable. It is spread via exchange of bodily fluids between an infected and non infected person, although it is primarily a sexually transmitted disease.

Anyone can be infected with HIV, no matter their age, race, sex, sexual orientation, nationality, socio-economic status, etc.

Hi all

Thank you to everyone who supports this cause and this group!

This group is currently running without an active admin.
All join requests are automatically accepted but due to the potential sensitivity and controversy, submissions are not automatically accepted.

Anyone keen on helping out would be most appreciated
This group is small with very little activity so would not need much work.
All that would be required is  someone with 1.) enough knowledge of HIV to reject submissions with false, stigmatising or offensive content and 2.) the chance to pop by once or twice a month to accept/reject submissions (which have a 1 month period before expiring).

Of course anyone with passion who would like to take this group further would be more than welcome to do so.

As for me, the founder and only admin:
While I am just as passionate as ever about HIV awareness, I feel my time is better used elsewhere. For a long time I have not used DevianART for anything but running groups, which I am now attempting to hand over.

As for what is taking up my time: I currently run a community service organisation that works with school students in a township in South Africa, I am a full time students who is preparing for post-graduate studies in psychology and I have a job as an illustrator, just to name a few.

Please leave a message here and/or send me a note if you are keen to help out.

:bulletred:What is the difference between "HIV" and "AIDS"?
HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. "AIDS is a stage of HIV, not the virus itself. AIDS stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome and is the final stage of HIV when the person is most affected and is likely to die from co-infection with diseases such as TB, pneumonia or even the common cold. Please also note that one does not "die of AIDS", but rather the co-infection, thus dying of "AIDS related illnesses" is more appropriate.

:bulletred:What is HIV?
HIV is a virus that affects a person's immune system that is is treatable but not curable. It is spread via exchange of bodily fluids between an infected person and a non-infected person. Ways of contracting the virus include having sex without a condom, sharing needles during intravenous drug use, any exchange of blood and from mother to baby during breastfeeding of the proper precautions are not met. Having sex without a condom ("unsafe sex") with an infected person is the most common was of contracting the virus.

Symptoms of untreated HIV do not show immediately, or even for number of years, meaning that it can be spread without people knowing. The following are some of the symptoms that appear up to years later (found at [link]:

1.)Rapid weight loss
2.)Dry cough
3.)Recurring fever or profuse night sweats
4.)Profound and unexplained fatigue
5.)Swollen lymph glands in the armpits, groin, or neck
6.)Diarrhea that lasts for more than a week
7.)White spots or unusual blemishes on the tongue, in the mouth, or in the throat
8.)Pneumonia
9.)Red, brown, pink, or purplish blotches on or under the skin or inside the mouth, nose, or eyelids
10.)Memory loss, depression, and other neurological disorders

Symptoms of other diseases will also be associated considering that the immune system is greatly lowered and other infects occur frequently and more severely.

Inevitably the person infected will die because of a co-infection with another disease. Co-infection occurs because of the immune system being highly compromised and illness such as the common cold, pneumonia and TB become fatal as the person's immune system is unable to defend the body.

Thanks so much for the add! It's really an honour!

I'm proud to say, we were able to sold a lot of ribbons in our school despite it being a bit pricey (5 pesos isn't really much, but, here it is for a small ribbon) :) It's a huge success!

It's great to hear that you are managing to raise funds. It's not often that I hear of other people actively doing something about HIV/AIDS. It can be so hard to just get people to think about HIV/AIDS in the first place.
